Pick
The plectrum is a small instrument that we can use while playing musical instruments such as guitar or mandolin, which we call stringed instruments. It is a tool used to play musical instruments, usually made of materials such as mica, ivory, horn, plastic or bone. If we look around the world, it is possible to see that they are made from different materials in various places. For example, you can come across picks with different designs made from brass, stone and tortoise shell.
Guitar picks are very important for guitarists. Unlike professional guitarists, amateur guitarists do not attach much importance to the pick. However, even the choice of pick affects the tone of your guitar. The thinness, thickness or material of the pick directly affects the tone of your guitar and your playing ability. For this reason, I will tell you in the rest of my article what kind of pick you should choose.
How to Choose a Guitar Pick?
There are generally 5 different types of thickness measurements in guitar picks. These measurements are as I will specify below. However, although they contain estimated numbers, they are decision-making items that can be correct for everyone, except for exceptions. You can choose a pick that suits you by reading these resources.
Extra Thin Guitar Pick: The thickness measurement for this pick type is valid for numbers 0.45 mm and below. It will be a pick that is suitable for acoustic guitar and sensitive playing. They provide a different tone than thick pick types.
Thin Guitar Pick: This type of pick can vary between 0.46 mm and 0.70 mm. Picks with this thickness can generally be suitable for use on acoustic guitars.
Medium Thickness Guitar Pick: Suitable for beginner amateur guitar users, the dimensions of this pick type can be between 0.71 mm and 0.84 mm thick.
Thick Guitar Pick: This pick type, which is more suitable for electric guitar users, is generally preferred with a thickness of 0.96 mm and has a thickness between 0.86 and 1.20 mm.
Thickest Guitar Pick: This type of pick, which is suitable for professional guitarists rather than beginner amateur users, is a type of pick with a thickness of 1.20 mm and above.
There are no strict rules for the measurements and guitar types I have given you above. It's just a suggestion. In this way, you can achieve more efficient and useful results with the picks you choose.
Pick Style And Design
My other suggestion for those who are just starting to use it is what the style and design of the pick should be. Pick types generally resemble a drop shape with their triangular and oval edged design. However, the comfort of holding the pick is more important than its design. For example, it is advantageous for you if the surface of the pick is rough. Because your hand will not slip while holding it and you can hold it more comfortably.
Pick Prices
Although pick prices are generally very affordable, they are sold in advantageous packages. There are at least 10 picks in a package, and additionally, they are available in packages with other products. To give an example of prices that vary depending on the package content and number, it is between 20 TL and 85 TL.
